Facing Percy Grainger
Originally presented by the National Library of Australia

25 Oct 2007 to 03 Feb 2008

Guest Curator: Brian Allison and Astrid Krautschneider

Australian-born Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961) left substantial evidence of his very creative life in his autobiographical museum on the University of Melbourne ’s Parkville campus and at his home in White Plains , New York . His stated desire was to leave the accumulated material culture of his personal world so future scholars could contextualise the evolution of his artistic achievements. Grainger also preached a doctrine he referred to as the ‘All Round Man’ which proposed that a truly creative individual expresses themselves across a range of media and disciplines and avoids rigid specialisation. In addition to the manuscripts and published editions of his musical compositions and arrangements, the exhibition also plots his passionate forays into cos tume design, painting and drawing, linguistics, Nordic folklore, vegetarianism and museology.
