Earthly reflections of heavenly things brings together three senior Australian artists from different cultural, religious, and artistic traditions, whose art practices reflect consistent engagement with mystical and spiritual matters. The artists are each motivated by distinctly different aims and their artworks refer to various histories of visual communication, yet they all share a non-representational visual language that is immersive, materially rich, and experiential.
Bilu, Brown, and Kngwarreye are not dogmatic or emphatic in their approach to art making. Their works are open propositions that communicate through the language of abstraction. Through their work, the artists offer us the experience of being drawn into a state of prolonged aesthetic contemplation; one that has the potential to exist independently of the world of ordinary sensations.
