The drowned world is a major survey of the work of Melbourne-based artist, Jon Cattapan. Cattapan’s practice has reflected and contributed to developments and themes in contemporary Australian art practice, including: cultural identity, urbanism, the use of hybrid media, and collaboration.
Since the 1970s Cattapan has pursued ideas relating to the city, spectatorship, disasters, cinema, digital culture, and borders and boundaries. With a thematic rather than a chronological focus, The drowned world includes a selection of paintings and works on paper that portray the development of Cattapan’s practice over the last three decades, with particular attention given to his collaborative projects.
Now open, The world is not a foreign land brings together work by Timothy Cook, Djambawa Marawili, Ngarra, Rusty Peters, Freda Warlapinni and Nyapanyapa Yunupingu. Crossing three geographically and culturally distinct regions—the Tiwi Islands, the Kimberley, and North-eastern Arnhem Land—each artist presents sometimes strikingly different perspectives on what constitutes Indigenous contemporary art.
