From the artists who accompanied Cook on his voyage to the east coast of Australia, to the convicts and gold-seekers who followed, the British and European artists who encountered Australia during the colonial era were out of their comfort zone.
Today, when we look at colonial art, many of us feel out of our comfort zone, confronted by a vision of Australia that might seem foreign and make us feel uncomfortable.
How did Russell Grimwade perceive the colonial art he collected, and why was he drawn to it? How did his acquisitions accord with his comfort zone, and how can this understanding enhance our encounter with the Grimwade Collection at the Ian Potter Museum of Art?
